How to Pray When You Have No Words

There are seasons when prayer stops being difficult and simply becomes silent. You sit down, and nothing comes. That silence is not failure, and it is not the end of your prayer life. It usually means you need borrowed words for a while.

Borrow the psalms until your own voice returns

The psalms exist partly because God knew people would need words on the days they had none. Pray one out loud, line by line, even if you feel nothing while saying it. Psalm 13, Psalm 42, Psalm 88, and Psalm 130 are written for exactly this.

Reading a psalm as your prayer is not second-best. It is praying Scripture, which is the oldest and steadiest form of Christian prayer there is.

Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!

Psalm 130:1-2 (ESV)

Pray one honest line

'Help.' 'I am tired.' 'I do not know what to ask for.' A single true sentence is a real prayer. God is not waiting for eloquence; he is listening for honesty.

If even one line is too much, name the person or situation and stop there. Naming is praying.

Let the Spirit carry what you cannot say

Romans 8 says plainly that when we do not know what to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us. This means the prayer is not held up by your ability to articulate it. Sitting in silence with that promise is itself an act of trust.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

Romans 8:26 (ESV)

Write instead of speak

Many people who cannot pray aloud can still write. A prayer journal removes the pressure of performance: no one is listening, nothing has to sound right, and unfinished sentences are allowed.

Try a simple structure — what happened, how I feel, what I need, one thing I am thankful for. Four short lines is a complete prayer.

Keep the habit small enough to survive a bad week

Three minutes daily outlasts thirty minutes attempted twice. Attach it to something you already do: the first coffee, the commute, the last light switch of the night. Consistency, not intensity, is what carries a prayer life through a dry season.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to pray someone else's words?

Yes. Praying the psalms, the Lord's Prayer, or written prayers is a historic Christian practice. Borrowed words are still your prayer when you mean them.

What should I pray when I feel nothing?

Pray the feeling itself: 'I feel nothing and I am here anyway.' Then read a psalm aloud. Showing up matters more than emotional intensity.

How long should a prayer be?

As long as it is honest. A one-sentence prayer prayed daily does more for most people than a long prayer attempted occasionally.
